An official from the hydraulic engineer's department said, "The project is still in a proposal stage. The tunnel would run from Amar Mahal in Kurla-Wadala-Naigaon and supply water to the MMRDA projects in Wadala. u00a0 We have estimated that 55 mld of water would be supplied to the Wadala project while the rest to the projects in SoBo. There are three major tunnel works going on in the city and this one has been proposed for the eastern part of the city." As the number of construction projects go up, the civic authority needs more water, and is in a constant process of saving water from leakages and thefts. An official pointed out that the MMRDA would have to spend a considerable amount in building the tunnel as it would benefit major projects in Wadala, where a number of residential and commercial towers are coming up. "The truck terminal would also be located in the same place where the trading business is concentrated, which is currently in B and C wards of the city. u00a0 Their demand would be more in future and if there is no alternative made available now, there could be a problem later," said the official. The project cost is estimated currently to be Rs 460 crore of which Rs 200 crore will be spent on the 4-km stretch from Amar Mahal to Wadala TT and Rs 260 crore on the 5.4 km from Wadala to Naigaon. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Water Supply) Rajiv Jalota said, "We would be sending a letter to the MMRDA soon. We have had a few meetings with them. In future water will be required in that area and it is necessary for us to plan now. It would also benefit the residents of Parel-Lalbaug area who would be residing on the mill lands." He added that water from the Bhatsa lake would be used. The city receives 3,350 mld of water against demand for 4,200 mld.
