Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Tuesday said that the tunnelling work in Mumbai regarding the Metro construction was done by a Turkish company. He now demands to discontinue the service of this firm after heavy rains inundated an underground station.

Addressing the report he demanded compensation to be paid to the owners of commercial establishments and residences in Mumbai and Pune who suffered losses due to heavy rains. He also blamed the Mahayuti government for ‘mismanagement’ and lack of preparedness.

He said that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been represented by non-elected members since March 2022. This is run by the Chief Minister’s Office and the Urban Development Department which is managed by Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. The Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA of Worli slammed the BJP Mahayuti and said that the BMC was never prepared for the monsoon.

After the first monsoon rains itself the operation on the Metro Line 3 between Acharya Atre Chowk and Worli was suspended after the underground station was flooded. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) was forced to suspend the operations after flooding was reported at the underground Acharya Atre Chowk station, reported PTI.

According to the statement released by the MMRC due to sudden and intense rainfall waterlogging was reported at the under-construction entry and exit structure of Acharya Atre Chowk station. The RCC (reinforced cement concrete) water- retaining wall constructed at the entry and exit collapsed due to sudden accumulation of water from the adjoining utility causing the station to flood. This incident has alarmed the concern over the construction quality of the metro station and monsoon preparation of the underground metro station that stretches 33-km-long between the Colaba-BKC-Aarey JVLR corridor.

"The company which was doing the tunnelling work is Dogus Soma, a Turkish entity. Why did you not remove this company the way you removed (ground handling firm from Turkey) Celebi. Did the company do this purposely to pose a danger to India and Mumbai? Is it not a security threat that the tunnelling work was awarded to Dogus Soma? Dogus Soma should be removed (from work)," Thackeray demanded.

Turkey is currently facing serious backlash for supporting Pakistan on ‘Operation Sindoor’, which was a military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has revoked the security clearance for Celebi and its associated companies in the interest of national security.

Celebi is a Turkish firm providing services of handling passengers and cargo at nine airports in India including Goa, Mumbai, Delhi, Kochi, Kannur, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Chennai.
