Maharashtra government on Friday appointed senior IPS officer Rajneesh Seth as the new director general of police (DGP). Seth will take over the charge from Sanjay Pandey, who had the additional charge of the DGP office since April 2021.
The order was signed by the state joint secretary, Venkatesh Bhat.
After the Bombay High Court&rsquo;s rap over the delay in appointment, the state government on February 10 informed the court that it would &ldquo;reconsider&rdquo; its representation to the UPSC to reassess IPS officer Sanjay Pandey&rsquo;s name for the post of Maharashtra DGP.
Pandey and Seth, both, did not talk to the media.&nbsp;
The director general of police &nbsp;was to be appointed from a panel of three officers of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).&nbsp;
The two other officers shortlisted for the post were Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale and Director General of Civil Defence K Venkatasam.&nbsp;
Seth, a 1988 batch IPS officer, served as the DGP of Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau till date.&nbsp;
Earlier, he was the head of Force 1 that was formed at the time of the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai.&nbsp;
He was also the joint commissioner of police, Mumbai (Law and order) for two years.
Seth was also the principal secretary of the state Home Department.
Seth, who had joined the police force on 25 August 1988, will be retiring by December 2023.
