After three cases of theft on the Mumbai-New Delhi Rajdhani Express last week, authorities are now planning to leverage technology to prevent similar incidents in future. According to sources, railways are planning to install closed circuit cameras (CCTVs) inside the coaches of the premier train.

Officials are planning a pilot project first, although the exact train and route has not been decided yet. &ldquo;We are still working out the details,&rdquo; said a senior railway official. When asked if passengers might object to cameras inside the trains, officials said there was no question about intrusion of privacy as it is a public transport, and after the spate of incidents of theft, the need to keep people safe was of higher importance.
Besides CCTV, physical security on platforms and AC coaches is also expected to be beefed up. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) is identifying locations along the route of the Rajdhani Express where groups involved in thefts operate. The last three incidents, including the theft case of the wife of Central Railway&rsquo;s General Manager, occurred near Kota station.
RPF has also decided to beef up security at platforms of stations where long-distance trains halt between midnight and 5 am. The security forces across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi are carrying out combing operations.
