Ardhendu Bose retained his presidency of the Royal Bombay Yacht Club winning the election for the president&rsquo;s post. Ardhendu polled 250 votes, beating contender Deepak Vaswani who had 165 votes. The figures could not be verified at the time of going to press.
Vaswani, who reportedly threw his hat into the ring extremely last minute, refused to comment on the result saying, &ldquo;the members have spoken. This is an internal matter.&rdquo;
Bose will helm the club, located near the Gateway of India, for the third term. Though there is buzz about some unsavoury emails flying around before the elections, Bose did not want to comment on controversy saying only, &ldquo;We are today, one of the best clubs in Mumbai. So much has changed, the interiors have been done keeping the 1846 ambience in mind, earlier the club&rsquo;s rooms looked like a govt. hospital rooms with peeling paint. Today, they are completely refurbished. The club too looked like a morgue and today, it has been restored with taste. I credit my team too for all the work they have done and members who have helped me,&rdquo; he finished.
While both Bose and Vaswani did not want to comment on controversy, the yacht club. like so many others in Mumbai, had its share of contentious exchanges. In January this year, papers had reported about a mail sent by Deepak Vaswani to other members, saying the club was riddled with losses to the tune of Rs 5 crore. While lips are sealed right now, it has not been all smooth sailing at the premier institution with its colonial charm.
