A physically challenged man was arrested by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) officials for trying to smuggle in gold ornaments weighing two kilograms at the international airport on Saturday. The ornaments were hidden in a tiffin box. The accused had landed in the city from Dubai via a Jet Airways flight around 11.30 pm. The market value of the seized gold chains, earrings and bangles was pegged at Rs 55 lakh. <img alt="" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2013/apr/04H087252.jpg" style="width: 500px; height: 389px;" /> Representation Pic Based on a tip-off, Deputy Commissioner (Customs) Samir Wankhede and a few AIU officials intercepted the man, who was trying to pass the green channel without declaring his goods. The accused failed to give satisfactory answers to the questions asked by the AIU officials, which made them suspicious. On checking his belongings, officials discovered gold ornaments packed in a tiffin box. A resident of Mumbra, the man told the officials that he was doing this job for the first time and acted as a carrier so that he could earn Rs 5,000 and a free ticket to Dubai. The accused claimed that he did not know anyone else involved in the racket and had got the job through a man he met in Mumbra. He also claimed that he was in dire need of money and took the job to raise money for his eight-year-old son&rsquo;s treatment. u00a0An official said, &ldquo;The ornaments were seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962 and the man was arrested under Section 104 of the Customs Act, 1962.&rdquo; u00a0
