The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation&rsquo;s (BMC) budget for 2015-2016 might not have seen the launch of new projects, but it gives a clear picture that the plans mooted by the Bharatiya Janata Party, be it at the Centre or state level, will also be carried out in the city.

Ideas like sodium vapour-based lights to be replaced by LED lights, solid waste management, and the &lsquo;Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao&rsquo; (save the girl, teach the girl) programme which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, all found mention in the budget.
The ruling party last month gave the city a proposal of converting street lights to LED ones, while the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao programme has been one of the Modi government&rsquo;s pet lines, and ways to implement the scheme have been planned by the Central government.
The Solid Waste Management (SWM) department has got a huge amount of R2,232 crore. The amount will be used for various sanitation programmes and the right to pee public toilets for women has been given preference. Among other plans, new waste compactors will be bought, and a new dumping ground will come up outside Mumbai.
Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte, said, &ldquo;This is a BMC budget planned looking at the future aspects of the civic body. There is huge focus on SWM along with various other projects in the city.&rdquo;
Other views The opposition leader in the BMC, Devendra Amberkar said, &ldquo;After the BJP got complete governance at all levels, their projects have been focused on, on a large scale.
SWM has been given more importance this time, and even the LED lights which we are opposed to have been included in the budget.&rdquo; The Education Committee chairman, Vinod Shelar said, &ldquo;SWM is an important part of BMC and the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is already on. There is nothing new in it. Also, LED lights are important for safer streets.&rdquo;
