In view of Mahaparinirvan Divas 2025, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday said that it has decided to cancel the planned 15 per cent water cut in parts of Mumbai on December 3-4.
The Mumbai civic body had earlier announced a 15 per cent water cut, scheduled across 14 administrative wards, from 10 am on Wednesday, December 3, to 10 am on Thursday, December 4, 2025.
Officials said that the decision was taken to ensure that the large number of followers visiting Mumbai for Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Mahaparinirvan Divas do not face any inconvenience.
The water cut had been proposed due to replacement work on a 2,750 mm Tansa water pipeline that supplies water from the Tansa dam to the Bhandup water treatment plant. The work, which involves removing an old pipeline and laying a new one, requires about 24 hours and was expected to reduce the water supply to the Bhandup plant by around 15 per cent.
As a result, 14 wards--including A, C, D, G-South, G-North, H-East, H-West, K-West, P-South, P-North, R-South, R-Central, and the L and S wards -- were expected to face reduced water supply.
However, considering the annual arrival of lakhs of Dr Ambedkar’s followers in Mumbai for Mahaparinirvan Divas, the BMC has decided to cancel the water cut to avoid inconvenience to visitors and residents. The corporation said that revised arrangements would be made for carrying out the pipeline work at a later date.
Meanwhile, the BMC had last week announced that the water supply in several areas of the city will be affected on December 1 and 2 due to essential maintenance work on the city’s water pipelines.
According to an official statement, the work involves connecting a 2,500 mm diameter water pipeline to the existing 3,000 mm main water pipeline near the Amar Mahal underground tunnel shafts (1 and 2), located at the Cheda Nagar Junction, Ghatkopar East.
The maintenance is scheduled to begin on Monday, December 1, 2025 at 10 am and will continue until Tuesday, December 2, 2025 at 4 pm, a total duration of 30 hours, an official said.
During this period, some areas will experience low water pressure, while in others, water supply will be completely suspended, the official said.
"Residents are advised to store sufficient water in advance. The BMC has requested citizens’ cooperation," officials said.
