Under its ongoing deep cleaning drive, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has collected 2,500 tonnes of waste from the slums in the city. The civic body kicked off the deep cleaning drive in November and shifted its focus to slum areas in the last two weeks. On Saturday, the drive was arranged in all 24 wards.
“The focus of the drive is now on small roads, alleys, footpaths and roads in densely populated areas. Special emphasis is being placed on slums and similar areas,” said Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal while overseeing the cleaning work at areas like Dharavi-Kumbharwada, the Sion Cemetery and the P Balu Chowpatty in Prabhadevi. He added that two-and-a-half thousand metric tons of waste was collected from slum areas last week. The drive is aimed at complete removal of solid waste and garbage from roads, footpaths and small alleys.

Meanwhile, the BMC’s Insecticide Department has exterminated 2,080 rats in the G North ward comprising Mahim, Dharavi and Dadar. BMC officials said that this is the highest number of rodents exterminated in a single day. The drive was carried out on Thursday, in which approximately 55 kg of wheat flour was mixed with a mixture of zinc phosphide and left in 9,065 identified holes.
