Over one crore voters in Mumbai will decide who governs the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the next five years when elections to the country’s richest civic body are held next month.

The BMC on Tuesday published the final electoral rolls on its official portal, showing a total of 1,03,44,315 voters spread across all 227 wards of Mumbai.

The Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) announced the election programme on Monday.

High-stakes elections to 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra, including cash-rich Mumbai civic body, will be held on January 15, with counting of votes scheduled for January 16.

The upcoming polls will see a direct contest between the ruling Mahayuti alliance and the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) for control of key urban centres in the state.

In Mumbai, civic elections are being held almost nine years after the last polls in 2017.

The five-year term of BMC corporators ended on March 7, 2022, following which the civic body has been run by an administrator appointed by the state government.

Voters in Mumbai

According to the final rolls, Mumbai has 55,16,707 male voters, 48,26,509 female voters, and 1,077 registered as ‘other’ voters, reported the PTI.

During the 2017 BMC elections, the city had 91,80,497 voters, including 50,30,363 men, 41,49,753 women, and 381 other voters, indicating a significant rise in the electorate over the past eight years.

Data released by the civic body shows that Polling Ward 164 in the administrative ‘L’ ward has the highest number of voters at 62,945, followed by Polling Ward 66 in ‘K-West’ ward with 61,799 voters, as per the PTI.

On the other hand, Polling Ward 142 in ‘M-East’ ward has the lowest number of voters at 31,575, followed by Polling Ward 1 in ‘R-North’ ward with 31,916 voters.

‘Other’ voters data

Among the 1,077 other voters, the highest number -- 281 -- has been recorded in Polling Ward 34 under ‘P-North’ ward, followed by 111 in Polling Ward 124 under ‘N’ ward, according to official data, according to the PTI.

With the final voter list now published, political parties have intensified preparations for what is expected to be one of the most closely watched civic elections in Maharashtra, the news agency reported.
