In the countdown to Maratha activist Manoj Kumar Jarange-Patil’s protest march reaching Mumbai, the state government has ordered a survey of the Maratha community. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will begin the survey from Tuesday.

The BMC has deployed over 10,000 officers and staff to conduct the survey, gathering empirical data to establish the backwardness of the Maratha community. “A BMC team will visit every household in the city,” said a BMC official. “We aim to complete the survey in five days,” the official added.

According to civic data, Mumbai has around 28 to 29 lakh households. “In every ward, 600 to 700 officers and staff will conduct the survey. Each enumerator will visit at least 50 houses a day. Seniors have instructed us to complete this survey in five days,” the official added.

Reports indicate that the Gokhale Institute of Pune drafted a form with around 156 questions. The questionnaire covers house size, occupation, education, domestic and electronic appliances, and political involvement of members of the household.

Civic Chief Iqbal Singh Chahal appealed to citizens to cooperate with BMC staff. “Employees will carry identity cards,” said an official. “This is an app-based survey, where BMC employees add information about individuals in the mobile application. Enumerators will obtain citizens’ signatures on the application,” said an official. Jarange-Patil’s march is scheduled to reach Mumbai on January 26.
