The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) yesterday submitted a compliance report in the Bombay High Court, saying it had acted on around 15,021 illegal hoardings and banners in 2015 and had registered around 127 FIRs the same year. It also told the court that requisite steps will be taken to ensure that no illegal hoarding or banner is put up on Republic Day.

The HC had told the civic bodies and district councils across the state, that they should see to it that no illegal hoardings and banners are put up in the state prior to, and on Republic Day, by politicians and social activists regarding it (Republic Day).
&ldquo;Nobody should wish or congratulate across the state through illegal banners and hoardings,&rdquo; a Bombay High Court bench of Justices Abhay Oka and C V Bhadang observed.

The HC bench was hearing a public interest litigation filed by social activists alleging that political parties had put up illegal banners and hoardings all over the state. BMC&rsquo;s Siddharth Bansode, Deputy Superintendent, Licences, assured the court that requisite steps will be taken to ensure that no illegal hoarding or banner is put up on January 26.
In the previous hearing, the HC warned of contempt action against the commissioners of civic bodies, and councils of every district in Maharashtra, if they failed to file compliance reports showing what steps have been taken to ensure no illegal hoardings and banners are put up on Republic Day. Hence, the BMC filed the compliance reports. The court will hear the matter next on February 18.
