Pressure is mounting on the jail administration post the brutal murder of inmate Manjula Shetye at the Byculla jail, more evident after jail superintendent Chandramani Indurkar was wheeled into JJ hospital in the wee hours of Tuesday.
Indurkar, who is facing an internal probe, has been on the receiving end from both the jail administration and Bombay High Court, which has sought an explanation for the delay in taking Shetye to the hospital. In-charge of the prison, Indurkar stays on the jail premises.
Sleep on the run According to the police, Shetye was beaten up by six women jailers around 10.30 am on June 23 but taken to the hospital only after 6.30 pm, and declared brought dead at JJ hospital around 7 pm.

A source at the jail told mid-day, "Indurkar has been under tremendous stress for the last few days. He had even approached a jail doctor, saying he was having sleepless nights and expressed his desire to go on a week-long leave to his home in Nashik."

Sources added that in the wee hours of July 18, Indurkar complained of uneasiness with pain in chest; he was also sweating heavily. Dr S A Khan, who also stays in the prison quarters, was summoned; he advised that Indurkar be taken to JJ hospital as it was "an emergency".
A battery of tests Indurkar has been admitted in the ICCU; he underwent an angioplasty yesterday and is under the care of professor and head of the cardiology department Dr NO Bansal.

Speaking to mid-day, Dr Bansal said, "He did have cardiac-related symptoms, and we conducted various tests, including a 2D echo and angiogram, which didn't show any major blockage. He said he was having difficulty sleeping and was stressed; we have diagnosed it as a case 'suggestive of acute cardiac ischaemia'." gotten a heart attack.
When contacted, dean T P Lahane said, "I am not aware about Indurkar's admission; no one has informed me."
