Based on a complaint filed on Tuesady by Sneha H, executive producer of Essel Vision Production Limited, cops arrested Raju Jagannath Kamble from his Dockyard Road residence. Essel vision has acquired the theatrical rights of the film that released last Friday.
The piracy of the movie first came to light after one of Sneha’s associates watched it on television and recorded it, which was later mentioned in the police complaint.
Investigation led the police to Kamble’s doorsteps. He admitted to broadcasting the movie after downloading a pirated copy online. Kamble was arrested and booked for source code theft and illegal broadcasting and distribution under relevant sections of the IPC, IT Act and Piracy Act. He was produced in the court yesterday and secured bail against a surety of Rs 30,000.
Insider’s involvement? Police sources said that in the FIR, the complainant also mentioned that a film distributor informed a senior executive from the company about the availability of movie copies online and attached five links to prove his claim. An internal inquiry into the matter led Sneha to believe that the print that went viral could either be a post-production copy or the copy after implementing the cuts suggested by Censor Board. In her complaint, Sneha stated that she believes that the original copy was either leaked from the studio or the Censor Board office. Sources added that movie director who had accompanied Sneha to the police station alleged involvement of a Censor Board member in the mischief.
Preliminary investigations by the cyber crime cell revealed that the copy that went viral was leaked by one of the members of the film’s unit, as a final copy after Censor’s cut is circulated amongst all the unit members.
Another source claimed that its is almost impossible to identify the person who uploaded the movie online, as the IP address of the server through which it was done has been located outside India. They added that it is doubtful that the investigators will be able to pinpoint details of the service provider and so the chances of probe going cold are high. In the past, movies such as Drishyam, Manjhi, and Baba Amte, among others, had been leaked in a similar way.
