The Mumbai Unit of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) searched the house of civil rights activist Teesta Setalvad yesterday. Setalvad has been fighting for the victims of the communal violence in Gujarat in 2002.
The CBI had registered an offence against Setalvad, her husband Javed Anand, and businessman Peshimam Gulam Mohammed, all directors of Sabrang Communications and Publishing Private Ltd.
The CBI had alleged that Sabrang Communications violated the Foreign Contributions Regulation Act (FCRA). They allege she received funds from foreign countries without any permissions and registration obtained from Ministry of Home Affairs.
A team of 16 CBI officers carried out the searches at Sabrang Communications and two premises at Juhu and Santacruz, including her house, and the searches were going on at the time of going to press. However, Setalvad alleged that it was a conspiracy by the BJP government that is at the Centre.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s vendetta politics by the government. They are trying to defame us,&rdquo; claimed Setalvad, who was present at the time of the searches at her home. &ldquo;The Vyapam scam has killed 60 odd people and CBI is busy with this.
I have already told them that I will co-operate fully with them but still they want to embarrass us and so carry out such searches,&rdquo; said Setalvad.
