The Dadar police, on Tuesday, arrested the Vice President of Citibank in a road rage case. The young banker was accused of thrashing and damaging the car of a dentist associated with Raj Bhawan and Nagpada police hospital.
Dr Vivekanand Rege (48), a resident of Mahim, is yet to come out of shock. He is even scared to be on wheels after the ugly episode on Tuesday morning.
Dr Rege in his complaint stated that he was heading towards his clinic at Crawford Market in his gray Honda City (MH-04-DB-2201) to handle an emergency. His car had reached Ghokale Road when a red car (MH-02-AY-1595) blocked his way. The man on the wheel (Citibank VP Sachin Gajraj Bafna) did not pay heed to repeated honking. Initially he gave way, but suddenly turned his car to the right brushing the rear side of the doctor's vehicle. He then stepped out of his car kicked the bumper of doctor's car and pulled out the rear view mirror.
"I was shocked, I stepped out and disclosed my identity. But instead of rendering an apology, he turned abusive and drove his car almost knocking me down," recalled Dr Rege.
Rege recalled that he immediately dialed the police emergency number and by then a traffic cop (few meters away) who witnessed the incident succeeded in stopping the reckless man on the wheels.
A film producer who was passing by stopped his car near the traffic police and narrated what happened.
Rege added, "The film producer (whose name is withheld) was a god sent messenger, he told the police how rudely the accused behaved."
Inquires revealed that Sachin is a resident of Raheja Hill top heights, Malad (E). He informed the police that he was working with Citi Bank as Vice President (GTS) section, Worli branch.
Traffic constable identified as Lokhande took both Dr Rege and Bafna to Dadar police station, where Dr Rege registered the complaint against Bafna. The police registered an FIR under Sections 341, 323, and 427 of Indian Penal Code.
The Dadar police confirmed the incident and revealed that since it was a bailable offence, Bafna was allowed to go home after he paid the bail amount at police station. The matter will continue in the Bhoiwada court over the period of time.
When contacted, an official from CITI Bank said it was personal matter and he did not wish to comment.
