It seems that the implementation of the coastal road project that BMC wants to do as early as possible will not be an easy task.
A discussion took place regarding the same at Press Club, Mumbai on Thursday where envioronmtalist and transport experts including Darryl D'monte, Sumaira Abdulali from AWAAZ Foundation, Transport Analyst and Expert Sudhir Badami, members from Save Aarey Conservation group were present.
Several citizen groups including NGOs have come together and demanded that the coastal road project should be scrapped. The group which have named themselves as 'Apna Mumbai Abhiyan' (AMA) have threatened to protest on streets and go to the court if the BMC plans to go ahead with the construction of costal road.
Environmentalist Harish Pande from Dahisar who has been consistently fighting to save the mangroves in the Dahisar and Kandivali belt said, "The sad part is that the authorities wants to go ahead with the project despite knowing the negative impact that the project would have on the environment. The BMC is yet to receive final clearance from Ministry of Environment and Forests (MOEF) and yet they have gone ahead and invited Expression of Interest for four of the stretches that they want to construct as a part of the coastal road project. We want the project to be scrapped and if the same is not done we will have to approach the court."
A former BMC Commissioner who was present on the occasion even alleged that the project was being planned to benefit private car owners.
The representatives of various groups and NGOs who were present during the occasion alleged that the BMC did not cared to interact with the citizens before even planning to go ahead with the project.
