Navi Mumbai police commissioner K L Prasad has quit the Indian Police Service (IPS) with ten months&rsquo; service remaining, but CM Devendra Fadnavis, who also heads the home department, will not let him go. Prasad put in his papers on Monday.

He has held a number of top posts in the past: state intelligence department (SID) chief, joint commissioner of Mumbai (law and order) and deputy/additional commissioner of Mumbai. The top cop was reportedly not happy because he had been expecting better postings and quit the IPS, said a police officer who is in the know of the matter.
He said that Prasad wanted the prestigious post of Mumbai or Thane commissioner. Prasad was posted in Navi Mumbai last March. Before this tenure, he headed the SID. He had also worked with the national agencies, the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Intelligence Bureau.
CM speak When mid-day asked Fadnavis about Prasad&rsquo;s resignation, he said he would discuss the matter with the officer. &ldquo;He is a fine officer and I will ask him to reconsider his decision (of quitting),&rdquo; the CM said on Monday. Fadnavis said Prasad had never discussed his case with him before sending the resignation.
He is an officer of the 1982 batch with a good service record. Prasad was the city&rsquo;s joint commissioner (law and order) when the terror attacks took place in November 2008. Prasad was not available for comment despite repeated calls and text messages.
