Investigation of two molestation cases, registered in the past week, has been keeping the Bandra and Kherwadi police on their toes. However, after searching for the culprits for almost six days and scanning a number of CCTV footages, the cops have managed to nab two accused in the case that took place on a busy Bandra street on July 7. The cops are yet to arrest the accused in the second case that happened on July 11.
Bandra horror Around 3 pm on July 7, two people on a bike molested a 17-year-old college girl in Bandra East. The duo touched the girl inappropriately and fled from the spot. The victim was so scared that she started crying. On spotting her, passersby alerted the police.
Sohan Kadam, investigating officer of the case, said, "After a complaint was filed in the matter, an FIR was registered against the accused under sections 354 and 34 of IPC and sections 8 and 17 of the POCSO Act. The arrested accused have been identified as Umesh Chavan, 24, a resident of Dynaneshwar Nagar, Bandra East and Sunil Rathod, 19, from Vakola."
Complicated probe According to police, three teams were formed to trace the accused. During the course of investigation, 40 people were interrogated and a number of CCTV footages scanned. While going through the footages, the first thing that the cops noticed was that the accused's bike had a Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj picture near the number plate. Then they came across a footage, which shows a courier boy entering a building in the locality. In the hope of getting some information from him, the cops checked the visitor's log at the building and contacted him. On questioning him, the officers got to know that some of his friends were waiting outside the building on the day of the incident. Then all of them were called and asked to get their bikes and the clothes they were wearing that day. Based on this the cops arrested the accused.
Auto driver on the run In the second case, an auto driver molested a 34-year-old Dharavi resident, while she was walking near the Vakola pipeline service road. The auto driver followed her and touched her inappropriately. He had even used offensive words against her. After the victim filed a complaint with the Kherwadi police, a case was registered against the accused under sections 354(A)(D), 509, 504, 506 of IPC.
Cops are still in the process of investigating the matter and scanning the CCTV cameras installed near the spot.
