After witnessing a marginal dip in the test positivity rate (TPR) on Wednesday, Mumbai saw a sharp increase on Thursday at 1.18 per cent. The number of new Covid-19 infections also went up, and the city recorded 441 cases.


Gradual rise


Mumbai’s TPR had dipped below 1 per cent for the first time in the second wave on July 29. On August 19, the city recorded the second wave’s lowest TPR at 0.53 per cent after which the graph has seen a gradual increase. The city also saw a marginal rise in new cases on Thursday. 


It was on August 16 that the city’s daily cases fell below 200 and it recorded the second wave’s lowest daily figure.

Mumbai saw three Covid deaths on Thursday. Of these, two had comorbidities and all were above the age of 60 years. The doubling rate continued to fall and was 1,446 days on Thursday. 

The city’s recovery rate remained constant at 97 per cent as 205 people were discharged after full recovery on Thursday.

State sees drop in numbers

The state’s daily Covid-19 cases figure saw a marginal drop on Thursday. As per the state health department report, 4,342 cases were reported. The state, however, saw a significant fall in the number of deaths at 55.

The state’s case fatality rate remained constant at 2.12 per cent as 4,755 people were discharged after full recovery on Thursday. 

The state has 50,607 active cases. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) saw a marginal rise in cases. 

As per the state report, 902 cases were reported in the MMR, including those from Mumbai. 

MMR’s cases increase

Apart from Mumbai, Panvel reported 96 cases, second highest in the MMR after Mumbai, followed by Navi Mumbai with 73 cases. Raigad reported 56 cases. Kalyan-Dombivli saw 61 cases and Vasai-Virar 32. 

The MMR, excluding Mumbai, registered seven Covid-19 fatalities on Thursday.  Thane and Panvel reported two deaths each, highest in the MMR after Mumbai. Navi Mumbai and Raigad saw one death each.
