COVID-19: Mumbai's daily cases drop, likely due to fewer tests

Three of the four deceased in the city had comorbidities, three were senior citizens and one was aged between 40 and 60 years.

The number of new COVID-19-related cases and deaths across Maharashtra dropped slightly on Monday, possibly due to fewer tests over the weekends. While the state recorded 5,210 new infections, the city registered 760.


Maharashtra health department’s data published on Monday reported 18 casualties from various parts of the state, but none from Mumbai. The BMC, however, registered four deaths on Monday. Three of the four deceased in the city had comorbidities, three were senior citizens and one was aged between 40 and 60 years.


The test positivity rate (TPR) stood at 5.7 per cent in the city where 13,293 tests were conducted on Sunday. Last week, more than 18,000 tests were being conducted daily and the TPR was around 4 per cent. In the first week of February, the TPR was below 3 per cent.


In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), a total of 1,364 cases were recorded on Monday. Apart from more than 700 cases in Mumbai, Thane added 132 new infections, Navi Mumbai 108, and Kalyan-Dombivli 134.

7,397 active patients in city
A total of 634 patients were discharged in the city, which currently has 7,397 active patients and the recovery rate stands at 94 per cent. 

As per the state health department report, not a single death was recorded in the MMR on Monday. Out of the 18 registered in the state, 10 were from Akola circle, Nashik and Pune reported two deaths each, and Latur registered four. Kolhapur, Aurangabad and Nagpur circles also didn’t report any casualties. Among the 5,210 new cases confirmed, Akola circle reported 1,154 of them, Pune circle 844 and Nagpur 946. 

As of Monday, the cumulative number of cases in the state climbed over 21.06 lakh and the recovery rate in the state dropped below 95 per cent after a month. In the state, 5,035 patients were discharged, while over 53,000 are currently undergoing treatment. The active cases in the state were around 30,000 in the first week of February.
