After fighting for his life for 12 days at u00a0KEM hospital, critically injured Dadar blast victim succumbed to his injuries yesterday; survived by wife Rinku, and one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Shonu After dwindling between life and death for nearly two weeks in KEM hospital, Mankeshwar Vishwakarma finally breathed his last yesterday morning, succumbing to the injuries he had sustained in the Dadar blast. u00a0 With his death, the toll for the 13/7 blasts rose to 24. Ramdin, Mankeshwar's father, said, "I went in to check on my son at around 7:30 am and found that he was not breathing. I immediately called the doctors, who went in to examine him. <img alt="" src="/imagedata/2011/jul/Rinku12.jpg" border="5" /> Rinku Vishwakarma, wife of Mankeshwar, collapses on hearing the demise of her husband at KEM Hospital yesterday <img alt="" src="/imagedata/2011/jul/Mankeshwar.jpg" border="5" /> They emerged in about 15 minutes, to inform me that our son was no more. My wife Amravatidevi has been inconsolable ever since." Rinku (26), Mankeshwar's wife rushed to the hospital when she received the information. The grief-stricken widow collapsed. Daughter Shoni also burst into tears, unable to comprehend the catastrophe. Vishwakarma's body was taken away for post-mortem, after which it was handed over to the family at 3:30 pm. Ashwini Sawant, a neighbour to the Vishwakarmas at their Sion home said, "Rinku was hopeful that her husband would survive, and was in a state of shock when she received news of his death this morning. It has been a harrowing experience for her, as she has been shuttling between home and hospital. u00a0 The hospital authorities had told us that an expert would visit the hospital to evaluate his condition last Friday. But the doctor never showed up." Vidya Khene, their landlady said, "The body will first be brought to this house, and then transported to his relatives' house near Sion Koliwada, Pratikshanagar, where the final rites will be performed." Ramdin said, "We will perform the rituals here and then leave for our village with our daughter-in-law and grand-daughter. None of us will return to the city." Megha Patil, another neighbour, said, "The breadwinner of their family has passed away, leaving her all alone to fend for herself and her little one. She needs to find a source of sustenance." Dr Pravin Bangar, Sr AMO at KEM hospital said, "We tried our best. Vishwakarma was critical from the day he was admitted. u00a0 A neurosurgery was performed on him, and he was taken off the ventilator after a few days. But on Friday we put him back on the ventilator. He passed away at 7:30 am."
