Despite Bombay High Court eliminating height restrictions on human pyramids during the upcoming Dahi Handi festival, expect a low fan fare this year. While major organisers are shying away from holding big budget Dahi Handi competitions, the govinda mandals don't seem as zealous as they usually are.
The festival has been facing several setbacks owing to repeated court restrictions on the height of human pyramids and the age of the participants. However, the latest court order has finally brought in clarity, as it has done away with the height restriction but allows participants only above 14 to take part.
Shiv Sena leader Pratap Sarnaik of Thane, known for organising competitions with hefty prize amounts, has lowered the stakes this year. But, there are some who don't want to dampen spirits. An MNS leader in Thane has announced a cash prize of Rs 11 lakh for the tallest human pyramid. Avinash Jadhav, who is organising the competition, said, "This time we are expecting ten-tier human pyramids."
Secretary of Dahi Handi Samanvay Samiti, Kamlesh Bhoir, said, "We will follow court directives. But as clarity came in late, mandals have not had the time to practice for the tall human pyramids. There are only two to three days of practice left now."
