The latest and third series of genome sequencing, in which 343 samples underwent the process at Kasturba Hospital, about 88 per cent has been found to be infected with the Delta variant and its derivatives. Out of the total number of samples, 54 patients had taken one dose of vaccine and 168 both doses. Of these 222 patients, 53 needed hospitalisation but no one died. Of the 121 people who hadn’t taken a shot, 57 were hospitalised and three of them died. All were elderly with comorbidities.

The third genome sequencing report released on October 17 reveals that 54 per cent of the total 343 samples was infected with Delta variants, 34 per cent with Delta derivatives and 12 per cent with other strains of the virus.  About 66 per cent was in the age group of 21 to 60 years. Only 29 children (8 per cent) below 18 years of age were infected. Of these, 11 were infected with the Delta variant, 15 with Delta derivatives and three with other strains of Covid. “This means Covid infection in children is completely under control,” said a BMC official.
