A 42-year-old <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/maharashtra-man-held-over-suicide-of-college-student-in-thane-district-23336766" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Mumbai police officer</a>, who was battling depression, committed suicide in suburban Kalina on Tuesday evening, an official said, reported PTI.
According to the Vakola police station official, the Assistant Police Inspector (API), identified as Prahlad Bansode, hanged himself on the terrace of a building housing police quarters, reported PTI.
Bansode, who hailed from Jalgaon in north Maharashtra, was attached to the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-ludo-game-turns-deadly-labourer-stabs-co-worker-dies-by-suicide-23336350" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad</a> (BDDS) of the Mumbai police and posted in the metropolis since the last two years, he said, reported PTI.
Police did not find any suicide note from the spot, but the deceased Mumbai police officer's wife gave a statement, saying her husband was depressed due to some illness, said the official, reported PTI.
On the basis of primary information, police have registered an <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-traffic-constable-foils-suicide-bid-on-bandra-worli-sea-link-23332840" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Accidental Death Report</a> (ADR) in the case, he added.
In another incident, a 37-year-old man allegedly killed himself after he was booked for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl in Thane district, police said on February 19, reported PTI.

Police said that the man allegedly killed himself by consuming shortly after he was booked, reported PTI.
A case was registered against the man for rape and other sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in a village in <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/man-commits-suicide-in-thane-by-drinking-poison-after-cops-book-him-for-rape-of-teen-girl-23335961" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Murbad taluka</a>.
"The rape FIR was registered on Saturday night and a hunt was launched for the accused by the police. When he came to know that the police had registered a case and were looking for him, the accused rushed to the house of his friend and consumed poison. He died in a hospital," police inspector Pramod Babar said citing a preliminary investigation, reported PTI.
As per the FIR, the accused, whose name is withheld by the police, allegedly raped the teenage girl from his village repeatedly between January 18 and February 15 by threatening to circulate her private pictures. He had also threatened to kill the parents of the victim, reported PTI.
Further investigation is underway, a police official said.
