The Thane civic body on Thursday issued a Diwali 2025 safety advisory and urged citizens to celebrate the festival responsibly.
An official statement, issued by the Thane Municipal Corporation, said as air quality in Maharashtra's Thane falls under the "moderate" category, only green (eco-friendly) firecrackers are permitted within the city, in line with the orders of the National Green Tribunal.
Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao appealed to citizens to celebrate a pollution-free Diwali by following the guidelines.
Rao extended his Diwali wishes to all residents and also advised them to take care of their health while celebrating the festival joyfully.
According to the guidelines, citizens are allowed to burst only green crackers and only up to 10 pm during the festive period.
Rao reminded the public that bursting traditional firecrackers causes harm not only to humans but also to animals, birds, and the environment. Therefore, people should act responsibly and ensure their celebrations do not lead to air or noise pollution, the statement said.

The Environment Department of the Thane Municipal Corporation, following the guidelines issued by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), has urged people to take safety precautions when bursting green firecrackers.
These include wearing cotton clothes instead of synthetic ones, bursting crackers only in open spaces, keeping water and sand nearby in case of fire, supervising children closely, ensuring that the elderly and unwell are not disturbed by noise or smoke.
"Citizens are requested to celebrate Diwali responsibly, prioritising both safety and sustainability," the statement said.
Meanwhile, earlier, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and its Fire Brigade on Wednesday issued a public advisory urging Mumbaikars to celebrate the festival safely and responsibly.
In the advisory, the BMC has requested citizens to avoid bursting firecrackers inside buildings, near trees, overhead wires, gas pipelines, staircases, and parking areas.
“Diwali is a time of joy and celebration, but safety must always come first,” said a civic official.
The BMC also reminded people that in case of any emergency, they can reach out to the fire and rescue services by dialling 101 or 1916.
The fire brigade stressed that Diwali should be celebrated in an eco-friendly way, avoiding both air and noise pollution caused by crackers. They advised citizens to wear cotton clothes, keep a bucket of water nearby, and avoid using open flames like lighters or candles to light crackers.
The Mumbai civic body also stated that there should be adult supervision, especially when children are handling firecrackers.
