The Indian Army on Thursday began construction work on a new Foot-Over-Bridge (FOB) at Mumbai's Elphinstone Road Railway station. The work, which will be executed on war footing, comes one month after a disastrous stampede struck the station.

The Army will receive support from the Western Railway to ensure that the project stays on the fast-track. Space has been earmarked for members of the Army workforce to clear and assemble materials for the construction work. According to <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/elphinstone-fob-design-by-army-gets-nod-from-railways/articleshow/61718308.cms?utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=TOIDesktop" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">reports</a>, work on the FOB is expected to be completed by the end of January 2018, at an approximate cost of Rs 10 crore.
In the meanwhile, a temporary foot-over-bridge will be constructed for the ease of commuters frequenting the route. The temporary structure will connect the Elphinstone road station to the adjacent Parel station.

Tweeting about the commencement work, Union Minister for Railways, Piyush Goyal stated, "Railways puts Mumbai's FoB work on Fast-Track: The Army has started the construction work on foot over-bridge at Elphinstone Road Railway station in Mumbai. #MumbaiThanksArmy."

Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis and Union Defence Minister, had visited various stations in Mumbai where the Indian Defence forces would play a key role in the upgradation of infrastructure. Other stations where construction work will commence parallely include Ambivali and Currey Road.
The decision to rope in the Army for the construction work was taken so as to eliminate the possibility of a long-drawn tendering process. 23 people died and numerous people got injured in the tragic stampede along a foot-over-bridge at the Elphinstone station last month.
