Police have registered a case on charges of extortion against a sub-inspector in Maharashtra's Thane district following a complaint about it from a private cab operator, an official said on Sunday.

The complainant claimed that while he was on way to Golavali in Kalyan area on December 19, 2022, the police sub-inspector (SI) stopped his car at Chakki Naka traffic check post and told him that a fine of Rs 500 was pending against him for violating parking rules, an official from Kolsewadi police station said.

The SI also allegedly demanded Rs 500 from the cab operator for not being in proper uniform. When the complainant offered Rs 100 to the SI, he allegedly demanded Rs 100 more and took away Rs 200 from him, the official said quoting the complaint.

The complainant also told the police that he did not lodge the complaint earlier as he wanted to consult his friends and relatives, the official said.

Based on the complaint, the Kolsewadi police on Saturday registered a case against the SI under Indian Penal Code Sections 384 and 385 (both pertaining to extortion).

No arrest has been made so far, the official said, adding that a probe is on into the case.
