The Legal Metrology Organisation (LMO) has fined around 128 petrol stations in the city, 47 in Thane and 68 in Pune, after receiving several complaints, and collected fines amounting to R3 crore from them, as they were supplying Compressed Natural gas (CNG) without verification.

The organisation also acted against the pumps for providing less quantity of CNG to their customers. &ldquo;We have acted against 128 CNG pumps in the city, 47 in Thane and 68 in Pune. We had also sealed around 14 pumps in Mumbai.
The CNG pumps belong to several companies like Mahanagar Gas Limited, Hindustan Petroleum, Bharat Gas and Indian Oil, and also to private dealers,&rdquo; said LMO Controller and Special Inspector General Sanjay Pande.
The organisation received around R3 crore in fines from the private owners and companies that ran them. &ldquo;The companies have told the controllers that they were not aware that CNG pumps also need to be verified from the Legal Metrology Organisation, as we earlier only verified petrol pumps,&rdquo; said Pande.
If a pump is not verified, those operating it might be cheating people on the quantity of fuel, said a controller at the organisation. The controllers told mid-day that the demand for CNG has been increasing and the pumps now need to be verified by the organisation, especially the nozzle from which the gas is pumped into vehicles.
&ldquo;We started taking action from the past one month, and in surprise checks we learnt that most of the CNG pumps were not verified by us. We feared they might be cheating people on quantity,&rdquo; said Pande.
