Hours after cops filed a 1,000-page chargesheet in the Hiranandani kidney racket, Mahesh Tanna, a social worker who is also the complainant in the case, received a letter from a 'Group of doctors', which was laced with threats. Tanna has been warned through the letter to stay away from the case or face consequences.
The Juhu resident found the envelope in his letterbox on Tuesday, when he returned home with his family. "It was a white envelope with a Rs 5 stamp on it. When I opened it, I found the letter addressed to me. I was shocked after reading it," Tanna told mid-day.

'No personal enmity' "In July, when I got to know about the ongoing racket in the Hiranandani Hospital, I requested the hospital administration to stop the operation. I had registered the complaint [in the kidney transplant racket] on July 14. Ever since, I have never gone to the police station or sought any publicity," Tanna said, adding, &ldquo;I do not have any personal enmity with Dr. Sujit Chatterjee (CEO of Hiranandani Hospital) or anyone else. I just did what every other Indian should do."
Approached police Following the threats, Tanna is adamant on taking the case to its logical end. &ldquo;Now, as some of the accused are out on bail, they are trying to pressurise me through these letters. I am not scared, and will not step back. I am going to register a case in Versova police station and also file a defamation suit of R10 crore each against all the doctors who call themselves the 'group of doctors'. They called me a criminal; this is insulting for a social worker like me. I am also planning to request the Bombay high court to cancel the bail of accused,&rdquo; added Tanna.

Tanna has approached the Versova police station and registered a non-cognisable complaint with them.
Police says "Tanna informed us about the 'threatening letter' he received. We told him to register a complaint where he lives i.e. Versova police station. We have asked him to write a letter to protection branch if he needs protection," said B Mahadeshwar, senior police inspector, Powai police station.
Helped bust racket The kidney transplant racket was busted at the Hiranandani Hospital in Powai in July, when Tanna acted on a tip-off, contacted the Powai police and helped stop a transplant midway. The transplant was being conducted on one Brijkishore Jaiswal and the donor was one Shobha Thakur from Gujarat, who had been listed as Jaiswal&rsquo;s wife on the form. The Powai police also arrested Chatterjee and four other doctors in connection with the case. Probe revealed that all five played a vital role in the scam and helped the racketeer Bijendra Bisen and his accomplices source and transplant kidneys illegally.
