Three people were killed and one was injured when an unidentified vehicle rammed into them while they were standing on a highway following a cab breakdown in Maharashtra's Akola district, police said on Wednesday, reported news agency PTI.

The accident took place at around 10 pm on Tuesday on National Highway no. 53 near Kurankhed village, they said, reported PTI.


A couple from Borgaon Manju town in the district was heading home in a cab along with the driver and another person after finishing their work.



However, the cab broke down on the highway, prompting all its occupants to get out and call a cargo vehicle to tow the four-wheeler.

While they were in the process of getting the cab towed, a speeding unidentified vehicle heading from Murtijapur to Akola struck them, Borgaon Manju police station in-charge Anil Gopal told PTI.

Dhiraj Sirsath (35), his wife Ashwini Sirsath (30) and cab driver Arif Khan (28) -- died on the spot. Another person was seriously injured and undergoing treatment at the Akola District Hospital, he said, reported PTI.

Efforts were on to trace the offending vehicle and its driver, the police added.

Woman killed, man injured as unidentified vehicle hits motorbike in Thane

In another incident, a woman was killed and a man suffered injuries when an unidentified vehicle knocked down their motorbike in Maharashtra's Thane city, police said on Monday, reported PTI.

The accident occurred around 11.30 pm on Sunday beneath a skywalk bridge near Vijay Garden housing society on Ghodbunder Road, they said.

The man and the woman were returning from a party when an unidentified vehicle hit their two-wheeler, an official from Kasarwadavali police station said.

The woman, identified as Swati, who was riding pillion, fell under the wheels of the offending vehicle and suffered severe head injuries. She died on the spot, the official said, reported PTI.

The man suffered a fracture in his hand and was rushed to a local hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment, he said, reported PTI.

The body was shifted to a hospital for a post-mortem.

The police were searching for the offending vehicle and its driver, the official said.
