Forty-year-old Pradeep Wadekar was diagnosed with TB six years ago, and subsequently admitted to ward number 15 at the TB Hospital in Sewree. <img alt="" src="/imagedata/2011/aug/patient.jpg" border="5" /> Pradeep Wadekar, a TB patient, was allotted the bed at the farthest corner of the ward at the TB hospital in Sewree According to his sister Nameeta, the runaway Wadekar' health deteriorated when the hospital staff started giving him the cold shoulder. Nameeta is convinced that this is the staff members' chosen method of chastisement for what they perceive as a slight. Last Thursday, Wadekar ran away from the hospital a third time, and it took Nameeta two long days to track him down and bring him back to the hospital. Nameeta claims that when she last visited Wadekar, she noticed that her brother had been allotted the bed at the farthest corner of the ward, and the nurses hadn't bothered to remove the blood- and sputum-stained cotton balls from around his bed. This correspondent also paid a visit to the hospital, only to find Wadekar's sheets covered with phlegm and blood, and his clothes stained with the same. Nameeta said, "I confronted the hospital staff, asking them why my brother was being punished by them. u00a0 They offered the justification that they had shifted him to the corner of the ward in order to prevent him from running away again. My brother's health is deteriorating because of the deplorable condition in which he is being kept. Nobody there is taking care of him," said Nameeta. The Other Side Rajendra Nanawre, medical superintendent of the hospital, said that the staff was not permitted to punish any patient in the manner alleged by Nameeta. He said, "We will look into the matter and take action accordingly." Nanawre was diligent enough to contact the concerned doctors within a few hours and ask them to attend to Wadekar immediately.
