How much will heritage walk cost? BMC does not know

The day heritage walks in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) headquarters begin is nearing, but there is no decision yet on the charges for the tours. BMC officials say they have no role to play in this and the decision will be taken by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation. MTDC officials say the charges will be fixed soon.

The BMC is gearing up to showcase its legacy by clearing eyesores and hindrances in the route of the heritage tours which will be conducted by MTDC. A museum is also being developed.


From Gate number 2 of the headquarters, tourists will be taken to a chowk inside the premises. They will then proceed towards various party offices of leaders in the BMC, then towards the Mayor's office, the general body hall further heading to the commissioner's office, and then to the museum on the second floor. There are also plans to take tourists to the second level terrace where flag hoisting takes place.

The work of clearing the place and doing last-minute touch-ups is on to ensure the structure looks presentable and tourists see the rich heritage, and the dome which is a beauty of architecture, said, officials. The BMC has also appointed experts to add content to the museum.

The BMC will open its doors for tourists only on weekends and public holidays for two hours. A limited number of tourists will be allowed, said civic officials. However, the MTDC is yet to decide on the charges even as the first tour is expected on January 26. The approximate charges that are currently in discussion are R300, said an official from MTDC.
