To tackle water shortage, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has decided to construct 150 additional bore wells and also clean existing wells.

With summer fast approaching, and water consumption levels set to rise, the initiative is intended to make sure that Thanekars don't face water scarcity. The TMC, at present, has 1,307 bore wells which are used on secondary basis in times of scarcity. &ldquo;Seeing the 30 percent water cut, a plan of constructing 150 new bore wells has been finalised and Rs 80 lakh has been sanctioned by the authorities,&rdquo; said Sandeep Malvi, Public Relation officer, TMC.
According to 2011 census, Thane had a population of around Rs 17 lakh, but it&rsquo;s now increase to Rs 22 lakh.
There are around 555 wells in TMC that will also be used during the water shortage period by the authorities. &ldquo;Among the 555 water wells, around 323 are well-maintained, while 232 are in poor condition,&rdquo; said Ravindra Khadtale, executive engineer (water department), TMC, adding that Rs 2 crore has already been sanctioned for this.
With water levels going down in the Baravi and Andhale dams, which provide water to TMC, there will be more water cuts in future. &ldquo;The total area of Thane Municipal Corporation requires daily 470 MLD water. A water cut of 30 per cent has started since level has dropped in two dams,&rdquo; added Khadtale.
Malvi further appealed that Thanekars go for water-harvesting plants. &ldquo;The Municipal Corporation had already asked residential societies to go ahead with water harvesting plants in their societies,&rdquo; added Malvi.
