A 12-year-old's stutter helped the police reunite him with his family . The boy, who hails from a tribal village in Jalna, had gone missing around two years ago.
According to the police, on December 6, 2014, Vicky and his grandmother came to Mumbai to attend a demonstration. "The boy happened to lose his way. He somehow reached Dadar railway station, from where he boarded a train and got down at Kalyan station. Here, the Railway Protection Force caught hold of him and sent him to the Bhiwandi children's home. He lived there for three months, before he was transferred to Ulhasnagar," said MH Nikam, police constable, children's protection unit, Thane crime branch.
In 2015, Vicky escaped from the children's home. But he was apprehended once again and sent to a home in Mankhurd. Homesick, the boy begged the police to send him back home. "He told us that he was a Std 6 student from Jalna. When he spoke, we also figured that he used to stutter. With few details in hand, we formed a team and contacted all the schools in the district. We also started reaching out to each and every school principal," said SS Kalbande, senior police inspector of the children's protection unit.
"Finally, one of the principals confirmed that a boy called Vicky had gone missing from their school two years ago. He also said that the boy used to stammer. We asked him to contact Vicky's family," Kalbande added. On September 28, widow Chaya Upate, Vicky's mother, took her son back home. "I am grateful to the police," said Chaya.
