The festive spirit in Dombivli was alive from the break of dawn as Govinda Pathaks eagerly organised their teams for the Dahi Handi celebrations. Across the city, smaller Handis were set up at multiple spots, with several featuring young girls who added an extra touch of cheer and vibrancy to the event.
In Dombivli, the local BJP MLA hosted a grand Dahi Handi at Bajiprabhu Chowk, backed by a budget of Rs 25 lakhs. The area was sealed off for the celebrations, with two large stages erected to control the crowds. Traffic diversions began from 10 AM, leading to major congestion throughout the day. Several well-known film industry celebrities also attended, extending support to the participating teams.
In Dombivli West, near Samrat Hotel, Dipesh Mhatre, the district head of the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray Party, organised a Dahi Handi offering a first prize of Rs 10,000 and a second prize of Rs 5,000. The event drew an enthusiastic crowd, with Pathaks receiving loud cheers as they showcased their skills and teamwork.
Meanwhile, at Char Rasta in Dombivli East, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) arranged a Dahi Handi worth Rs 9,999, coupled with a public lucky draw. Prizes included a bicycle, television, fridge, and washing machine. Govinda Pathaks, who impressed the audience, were rewarded with cash prizes between Rs 2,000 and Rs 3,000 for their “salami” — a traditional salute or act of performance.
All day long, Govinda Pathaks moved vibrantly from one spot to another, with their signature “piper” (energetic calls and chants). Women Govinda Pathaks also took part enthusiastically in Dombivli, performing the “salami” with striking skill and energy. To ensure smooth proceedings, organisers arranged water points for participants and distributed cold drinks to the public.
While trains ran with minor 5 to 10-minute delays, intermittent light showers ensured there was no serious disruption like waterlogging.
The celebrations are set to conclude by 10 PM tonight, with handis this year raised to record heights, making the challenge tougher for the Pathaks. Organisers kept a close watch on performances, picking the best teams to break the Handis.
As expected, the constant movement of Pathaks between locations triggered heavy traffic jams across the city. Many participants travelled on two-wheelers, tempos, and even trucks, further adding to the gridlock.
In Thane too, Dahi Handi festivities were in full swing, with traffic snarls reported from several key spots. Major events were held at Tembhi Naka, Raymond, Hiranandani Meadows, Naupada, Vartak Nagar, and Raghunath Nagar.
At Vartak Nagar, the excitement peaked when the “Jogeshwari Konkan Nagar Cha Raja” team created history by building a remarkable 10-tier pyramid. Women members also played a crucial role in the formation, symbolising inclusivity and teamwork. The team bagged a grand prize of Rs 25 lakh, presented by Transport Minister Shri Pratap Sarnaik, who was the chief organiser. This milestone feat electrified the atmosphere, making the Thane celebration a memorable highlight of the day.
