Nearly two months after actress Karisma Kapoor and business tycoon Sunjay Kapur agreed to a settlement and divorce through mutual consent in the Supreme Court, the family court in Mumbai granted them divorce yesterday. Only their respective lawyers accompanied them to the court; no family member was present.

As per the procedure, they first visited a marriage counsellor and then went to the court, presided over by Principal Judge IJ Nanda. The lawyers told the court that the two had agreed before the Supreme Court to get a divorce amicably and through mutual consent. At the end of the hearing, which lasted just 15 minutes, the court granted them divorce.
Outside the court, Karisma and Sunjay, both cheery, chatted for a few minutes and then left with their lawyers.
Sunjay&rsquo;s lawyers, Aman Hingorani and Priya Hingorani, told mid-day, &ldquo;We informed the family court about the matter being resolved amicably before the Supreme Court and also that the terms [for divorce] have been settled. The court then granted divorce to the couple.&rdquo; Karisma&rsquo;s lawyer, Mahesh Jethmalani, too, said both parties had amicably resolved the matter. &ldquo;The financial and custody terms have also been settled.&rdquo;
Consent terms Neither Karisma nor Sunjay offered comments to mid-day following the divorce. Sunjay&rsquo;s lawyers had on February 28 told the SC that they want to settle the matter amicably, after which Karsima&rsquo;s lawyer also gave the consent for it.
Sunjay and Karisma had married in 2003. They decided to file for a divorce through mutual consent in 2014, but withdrew the petition after Karisma alleged that Sunjay had failed to comply with the financial commitments mentioned in the terms of consent. Sunjay had argued in court that the actress had failed as a wife, mother and daughter-in-law, and that she had married him only for money. The actress had also filed a domestic violence case against Sunjay and his mother, which the apex court quashed in April.
