Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday announced that the state government will set up a committee headed by the Director General of Police (DGP) to address attempts to defame individuals through social media, reported the PTI.

Speaking in the legislative assembly while responding to a question on cybercrimes, the chief minister said the panel would examine the issue in detail and recommend appropriate measures.

CM Fadnavis said the committee led by the state DGP would study cases where individuals are targeted or defamed on social media platforms. The panel will also suggest ways to enable authorities to take effective action in such incidents.

The move comes amid rising concerns about the misuse of social media for spreading false or defamatory content.

Earlier in the House, Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam said cybercriminals were increasingly using advanced technologies, leading to new forms of online fraud and digital crimes, according to the PTI.

He noted that the government was actively working to strengthen awareness and preventive measures against cyber threats.

Awareness app to send 21 crore messages monthly

Kadam informed the assembly that the state government has developed a special mobile application aimed at spreading awareness about cybercrime.

Through this application, around 21 crore awareness messages will be sent to citizens every month to educate them about cybercrime, common online threats, and preventive steps.

Issue raised in Assembly

The issue was raised in the House by Prashant Thakur of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). During the discussion, supplementary questions were also asked by Vikas Thakre of the Congress, as well as BJP legislators Babanrao Lonikar and Rahul Kul, as per the PTI.

8 lakh Maharashtra farmers benefiting from solar agri-feeder scheme: Fadnavis

Meanwhile, CM Fadnavis on Tuesday told the assembly on Tuesday that eight lakh farmers have benefited from the government’s flagship solar agricultural feeder scheme, which provides affordable daytime electricity for irrigation and farming activities.

Fadnavis said that work on 4,000 MW capacity under the Chief Minister Solar Agricultural Feeder Scheme (Mukhyamantri Solar Krushi Vahini Yojana 2.0) has been completed.

The government now plans to scale up the initiative by an additional 10,000 MW, aiming to extend the scheme to nearly all regions by next year, though some areas still face challenges, the news agency reported.
