<p>Maharashtra Chief Minister <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/navi-mumbai-elderly-man-cheated-with-bogus-knee-treatment-promise-fir-registered-23627206" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Devendra Fadnavis</a> on Sunday paid tribute to internationally acclaimed photographer Raghu Rai, describing his death as a significant loss to Indian journalism and visual storytelling.</p>
<p>In a condolence message, Fadnavis said Rai was a remarkable figure who captured the depth of human emotions through his lens and chronicled India&rsquo;s journey with rare sensitivity and insight.</p>
<h2>Documenting India&rsquo;s history and human stories</h2>
<p>Fadnavis noted that Rai&rsquo;s work went beyond photography, serving as a visual record of India&rsquo;s social, cultural and developmental transformations. His images documented everyday life, as well as defining historical moments, with striking clarity.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maharashtra-positioned-as-emerging-global-investment-hub-says-devendra-fadnavis-23627161" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">The Chief Minister</a> highlighted Rai&rsquo;s coverage of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, stating that his photographs brought global attention to the suffering of victims and helped convey their pain to the world.</p>
<h2>International recognition and distinguished career</h2>
<p>Rai&rsquo;s work received widespread international acclaim over several decades. He contributed to leading global publications such as Time Magazine, Life Magazine and The New York Times.</p>
<p>He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972 and received numerous other honours both in <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maharashtra-devendra-fadnavis-chairs-meet-to-tackle-possible-low-rainfall-heatwaves-23626675" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">India</a> and abroad. His photographic series Human Management of Wildlife in India earned him the &ldquo;Photographer of the Year&rdquo; award in the United States, while he was also recognised by the French government for his contribution to photography.</p>

<p>Apart from his work behind the camera, Rai contributed to the global photography community. He served as a jury member for World Press Photo and was associated with photography initiatives organised by UNESCO, helping mentor emerging talent.</p>
