Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, who was said to be recuperating from a cervical spine surgery, underwent an emergency surgery on Thursday morning after he developed blood clots that were compressing his spinal cord. The chief minister, who is admitted on the 19th floor of Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital since November 10, underwent his first surgery on November 12.

However, according to hospital sources, he developed issues and was taken in again for a surgery to remove the blood clots. The second surgery, which was performed in a special operating theatre on the 18th floor of the hospital, is said to be headed by  Dr Shekhar Bhojraj, his spine surgeon, and Dr Ajit Desai, his cardiologist.

The chief minister had been suffering from neck and back pain for days and was seen wearing a neck brace before he was hospitalised. He attended the weekly cabinet meeting before he was admitted to the hospital.
