Mumbai: Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), which was going to undertake a one-day mass bunk on Friday to support the striking medicos of Kanpur, called off the strike on Thursday evening.
The senior doctors of Kanpur&rsquo;s Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College called off their indefinite strike on Thursday after six days as the UP government invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) against them a day ago.
The incident, which resulted in the strike that allegedly claimed the lives of 27 patients, took place on February 28 after a major clash broke out between the doctors and Samajwadi Party MLA Irfan Solanki and his supporters. Both the parties ended up getting injured following the incident. The commotion broke out after a few medical students collided with a car that they claimed belonged to Solanki in front of the medical college.
&ldquo;Owing to the standoff with the UP government, our friends in Kanpur medical college were on an indefinite strike to protest against the police brutality they faced. In solidarity, we were planning to observe a one-day mass bunk which has now been called off,&rdquo; said Dr Santosh Wakchaure, president of the MARD.
&ldquo;Our initial demands, however, included the suspension and arrest of the accused cops and politicians and that all the doctors who were arrested should be released,&rdquo; added Dr Wakchaure.
Resident doctors had organised a silent protest in the form of a two minutes &lsquo;maun vrat&rsquo; at JJ hospital on Thursday afternoon.
