Here&rsquo;s good news for people whose residential structures face demolition in view of their unauthorised status. Almost 75 per cent of such structures in Mumbai, along with other urban areas in the state, will be regularised through a policy expected to be unveiled soon.

A recommendatory report by city civic chief Sitaram Kunte is being considered for framing this policy. Mumbai has many buildings that are unauthorised structures. Housing society Campa Cola has been fighting a legal battle for getting its unauthorised flats regularised.
The state government has said that it would regularise such structures, wherever possible. Navi Mumbai, Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad also have such structures in large numbers. A few years back, the government had formulated a special law to protect illegal structures in Ulhasnagar.
Defaulters were asked to pay penalties and regularisation charges. Sources said that the government would implement a similar policy. In reply to a question on Pimpri-Chinchwad, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis told the legislative assembly yesterday that the Kunte report had been accepted in principle by the state government.
After seeking remarks from the law and judiciary department, the revenue department was studying the report, said Fadnavis. The Cabinet will discuss the report and study remarks from the concerned departments before finalising the policy by next month.
The Kunte committee was formed last December for studying the issue of unauthorised structures in the urban areas of the state. The panel was also asked to recommend ways and means to prevent unauthorised structures in the future. Suggestions and objections were also invited from the public.
Fadnavis said that the regularisation would not happen in a haphazard manner. According to him, a proper survey would be held first. &ldquo;The Supreme Court and the High Court will be requested to stay demolition till the survey is conducted,&rdquo; he said.
