Maharashtra govt sets September 1 deadline for aggregator registration, warns of strict action

The Maharashtra government has directed all appbased passenger transport aggregator companies operating in the state to complete their registration under the Aggregator Policy 2026 by September 1 2026 warning that strict action will be taken against companies operating without registration or violating the policy after the deadlineTransport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said the state will enforce the policy to make appbased transport services safer more transparent and better regulated while ensuring that all operators comply with the lawThe move comes amid the rapid expansion of appbased transport services across Maharashtra with millions of commuters relying on such platforms for daily travel The government said the policy is intended to strengthen passenger safety verify the legality of vehicles ensure drivers meet eligibility requirements and clearly define the responsibilities of aggregator companiesCitizens should certainly benefit from technologydriven services However no one will be allowed to bypass the law in the name of convenience or compromise passenger safety Sarnaik saidRegistration mandatory for aggregators and commercial vehiclesUnder the Aggregator Policy 2026 all aggregator companies must register with the Transport Department Vehicles operating on aggregator platforms must hold valid permits and registrations while bikes autorickshaws and cabs used for passenger transport must be registered as commercial vehiclesThe policy prohibits commercial passenger transport using private or other unauthorised vehicles without a valid aggregator licenceIn addition all vehicles operating under aggregator platforms must have the required insurance coverage The government has also mandated aggregator companies to implement adequate passenger safety measures during trips The Transport Department has been instructed to establish the systems necessary to deliver the services prescribed under the policyGovernment warns against illegal passenger transportReiterating the governments focus on commuter safety Sarnaik said enforcement would be strengthened after the registration deadlineThe passenger is at the centre of this entire system Every commuter has the right to receive safe reliable and lawful transport services The government is not opposed to the aggregator business but it must operate strictly within the legal framework Companies should complete the registration process by September 1 Any illegal passenger transport detected after that will invite legal action against the concerned company and the vehicles involved without any leniency he saidThe government said the policy is aimed at bringing greater discipline to aggregatorbased passenger transport while safeguarding the interests of compliant companies drivers and passengers It also urged companies to complete the registration process well before the deadline by submitting all required documents and meeting the prescribed regulatory requirements
