Hundreds of political workers including sarpanches of nine villages from Karjat area joined the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday, reported the PTI.

The political workers were inducted in the party in Eknath Shinde's presence in a ceremony held at the Mayor's bungalow in Thane district.

During the induction of new political workers into the party, Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra Industries Minister Uday Samant was also present.

Besides sarpanches of nine villages, numerous panchayat members and other political workers led by Ramesh Babar of the Katraj Vikas Aghadi joined the ruling party, citing the lack of development in the region, according to the PTI.

The large number of workers joining Shiv Sena comes just ahead of the civic polls.

It comes days after as many as seven former corporators and many party workers from the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP (SP) in Thane district had joined the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.

The induction had taken place earlier this month in the presence of Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde, Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske, and other senior leaders.

This development marks a major setback for the NCP (SP), especially in the Kalwa-Mumbra region--considered a stronghold of Jitendra Awhad, a senior NCP (SP) leader.

Among those who had joined the Shiv Sena were former Thane Municipal Corporation Opposition Leader Milind Patil, ex-corporators Manali Patil, Mahesh Salvi, Manisha Salvi, and Surekha Patil (who also served as working president of the Thane Mahila NCP – Sharad Pawar group). Former corporator Pramila Mukund Keni and NCP (SP) youth leader Mandar Mukund Keni also switched allegiance to the Shiv Sena.

With these additions, Shiv Sena continues to consolidate its strength in the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), where it currently holds 78 corporator seats.

In an official statement on May 8, the Shinde-led Shiv Sene had earlier said, “The Shiv Sena does not operate only during elections. Our commitment is 12 months, 365 days a year. That dedication and consistent grassroots work have inspired leaders and workers from other parties to place their trust in Eknath Shinde’s leadership and join our movement.”
