A labourer was killed and another seriously injured when an old staircase collapsed during demolition work at Atgaon railway station on the Central Railway line in Thane district of Maharashtra, officials said.

The incident took place on Friday, they said.


The staircase gave way suddenly while workers were dismantling it, leading to the tragic incident.



Labourer pulled out of the debris

According to sources, one labourer was pulled out of the debris, while the second remained trapped. The injured worker, who sustained serious leg injuries, was shifted to Shahpur Sub-District Hospital for treatment.

The collapsed staircase was carefully cut using gas cutters, after which the body of the deceased labourer was recovered.

Probe to be launched

Railway authorities are likely to investigate the cause of the collapse to prevent similar accidents in the future, sources said.
