Mumbra Police seized mephedrone worth Rs 27.21 crore after busting an interstate drug-peddling racket, which officers on Monday said is the largest drug haul at the police station level under the Thane Police Commissionerate, reported news agency PTI
Following a tip-off, the NDPS squad of Mumbra Police Station set up a trap near a hospital and arrested Basu Umardin Sayed, recovering 23.5 grams of mephedrone from him, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) Subhash Burse.
“Our probe revealed a direct supply chain stretching from Madhya Pradesh to Thane. Sayed’s interrogation led police to suppliers Ram Singh Amar Singh Gujjar (40) and Kailash Shambhulalji Balai (36), both residents of Madhya Pradesh,” the DCP said.
He added that 3.51 kilogrammes of mephedrone worth Rs 7.30 crore were seized from Gujjar and Balai.
Subsequently, a team from Mumbra Police travelled to Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh and arrested two more suppliers, identified as Manohar Lal Ranglal Gujjar and Riyazmohammad Sultanmohammad Mansuri alias Raju, the officer said.
“We recovered 9.95 kilograms of mephedrone worth Rs 19.91 crore from Manohar Lal and Raju. The total haul stands at 13.629 kilograms valued at Rs 27.21 crore. This is the highest seizure at the police station level under the Thane Police Commissionerate and a notable achievement for Mumbra police station,” he added.
All the five accused are history-sheeters with prior cases registered against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the Indian Penal Code, and the Arms Act, the DCP said.
According to police data, the NDPS squad of Mumbra Police has seized narcotics worth Rs 48.50 crore in 954 operations since January 2024.
Mumbai Police busts drug factory, seizes mephedrone worth Rs 195 crore; three held
Last month, Mumbai Police said that it had busted a drug factory and seized raw materials and mephedrone worth Rs 195 crore.
The police stated that three people have been arrested so far in connection with the case.
According to the authorities, Mumbai Police’s Crime Branch uncovered a large mephedrone (MD) manufacturing unit and seized drugs and raw materials estimated to be worth Rs 195 crore.
