The Maharashtra State Punjabi Sahitya Academy, in collaboration with the 11-Member Sikh Coordination Committee, has proposed a new elective course on Sikh Martyrdom (1500–1765), officials said on Wednesday.
The move is a major step to promote Sikh history and values in education.
The course is aimed at being introduced in schools, colleges, and universities across Maharashtra, an official statement said.
The Academy's Executive Chairman, Bal Malkit Singh, officially submitted a letter Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, urging the government to include the course in the state's curriculum. The proposal is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, an official statement said.
The course seeks to educate students about the sacrifices made by the Sikh Gurus, especially Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, whose 350th martyrdom anniversary is being observed. It will also highlight key values such as resistance against injustice, sacrifice, spiritual strength, and unity in diversity, it said.
According to the official statement, the University of Mumbai responded positively to the proposal. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ravindra D. Kulkarni, expressed support and said that academic teams are already working on designing a detailed syllabus. The course will reflect the history, teachings, and the civilisational importance of Sikh martyrdom in India.
"The university expressed its full alignment with the vision of introducing such a course and confirmed that the syllabus is being meticulously developed by its academic teams, reflecting the teachings, history, and impact of Sikh martyrdom in India’s civilisational journey," the statement said.
The initiative is being led with the spiritual guidance of Sant Giani Harnam Singh Ji Khalsa, head of Damdami Taksal and Sant Samaj, known for promoting Gurmat-based education and cultural awareness among the youth, it said.
"The initiative is not just about introducing a subject -- it’s about empowering the next generation with knowledge of sacrifice, moral strength, and commitment to righteousness. Maharashtra has always stood for inclusive values, and this course will reaffirm those ideals. I sincerely thank CM Fadnavis for his vision and encouragement in taking this forward," said Bal Malkit Singh, Executive Chairman, Maharashtra State Punjabi Sahitya Academy under Government of Maharashtra.
