In a shocking incident outside the Bombay High Court in south Mumbai on Monday, a man allegedly attempted to set himself ablaze, causing panic in the busy Fort area, officials said.

The incident briefly disrupted traffic movement near the court.

The court staff, lawyers, police personnel, and bystanders rushed to help the man and managed to extinguish the flames, they said.

He was immediately shifted to GT Hospital in a critical condition, said an official.

Hospital officials stated that he has suffered 50 to 60 per cent burn injuries. His condition is described as serious, and he is under close medical supervision.

Dispute may be linked to project

According to the officials, preliminary information suggests that the man allegedly took the extreme step following a dispute. Police are verifying the exact circumstances and recording statements from witnesses.

Authorities said he is a project-affected person from the Naradave Medium Irrigation Project in Kankavli, Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra.

The police officials were examining whether the dispute was linked to the issues.

Statements of witnesses present at the spot are being recorded as part of the investigation.
