Chande's mental state emerged after the CISF personnel handed him to the Sahar police. During the interrogation, Chande kept giving inconsistent replies. He first gave his name as Santosh Narang, then changed that to Douglas John Goldberg and gave a London address.

At one point he even claimed he was from the Army and had come to the airport for surveillance work.
The police finally found his brother's number on him and contacted the family.

The brother, a labourer, confirmed that Chande was mentally unstable. He said Chande was a graduate, but was removed from his job five years ago.

He was charged under section 120, 22, and 51 of the Bombay Police Act for entering a restricted area.

A Sahar police officer said, "Chande lives in Airoli with his family. But they don't take adequate care, so he wanders around.
