Mumbai's E ward, comprising crowded areas such as Nagpada, Agripada, Dongri, and Masjid Bunder, originally developed due to industrial units such as textile factories, and the Mumbai Port Trust dock area bordering the east coast. Today, this is partly industrial and partly residential, and continues to be home to the iconic Mazagaon Dock. It's a ward with a rich history, and one that contributes significantly to the personality of Mumbai, as home to JJ Hospital, Nair Dental Hospital, Masina Hospital, Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Garden and Zoo, and Western Railways’ Mumbai Central Terminus, each with its own tremendous heritage value.

Its residential landscape is dominated by old buildings, many of which stand on entirely privately owned land and come under the pagdi system. Today, the ward faces the challenges of high-density housing, with buildings built close to each other, a large number of under-construction buildings, and inadequate public parking spaces.

In the 2017 BMC elections, the E ward witnessed a considerable shift in its political landscape, with BJP and Shiv Sena garnering a considerable number of votes, even though the Congress party, Samajwadi Party, and the regional party Akhil Bharatiya Kamgar Sena, founded by gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli retaining four out of E ward’s seven electoral wards.
